The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco offers two distinct camp programs designed to enrich the lives of young people through a bl of religious practices, cultural traditions, and varied activities med at fostering growth and connection.
His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos emphasizes the importance of these opportunities for our youth: Providing such experiences is crucial as they lay the foundation upon which campers participate in an engaging, fth-based journey. Our Greek Village Camp and Metropolis Summer Camp each provide unique avenues for young individuals to emotionally develop, broaden their horizons through diverse activities, and form lasting bonds that keep them involved with our Church.
Greek Village Camp's 10th Year Celebration
In its tenth year of operation, the annual Our Greek Village Camp invites children aged 8-15 on a one-week language and culture adventure at Snt Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center in Squaw Valley, California. The program includes dly worship services, language instruction, Greek folk dance and music classes, arts and crafts workshops, sports activities, theatre performances, and a visit to the adjacent Monastery of the Theotokos the Life Giving Spring. Campers engage with agriculture by ting to gardens and caring for goats and chickens. The week culminates in a traditional Greek feast featuring lamb on the souvla, followed by an outdoor Gli under starlit skies. Themes change annually, reflecting different regions of Greece e.g., Peloponnesos, Crete, Macedonia, Dodecanese Islands, with this year focusing on Athens – Past to Present.
Snt Nicholas Ranch Welcomes Metropolis Summer Camp
The Snt Nicholas Ranch is also home to the celebrated Metropolis Summer Camp, which marked its 38th year providing an exceptional camping experience for children aged 8-18. This year's theme, Rejoice, drew inspiration from Philippians 4:4, encouraging campers to find joy in their Lord always. Celebrating the rich history of Snt Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center dating back to the late 1800s, camp activities featured learning about pioneer life through wagon rides from a historic barn to the lake, mining for gold, square dancing, Orthodox Life lessons, arts projects, sports games, swimming, archery, fishing, and more. Over 300 enthusiastic campers participated in three one-week sessions.
Looking Ahead to Summer Camps
The Greek Village Camp is scheduled to return in its eleventh year in late June 2020, while the Metropolis Summer Camp will take place at Snt Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center in July 2020. We are eagerly anticipating another remarkable summer filled with happy memories for our youth.
