Ontario Square Round Dance Federation:
The Journey of Modern Square Dancing
When most individuals hear the term square dancing, their minds often revert to nostalgic memories from school dance programs, grappling with the complexities of steps like do-si-do and allemande left. For many, the excitement around square dancing was largely tied to a fondness for classic country music, often accompanied by traditional attire.
Modern square dancing has undergone significant transformation since those honky-tonk days, embracing mnstream culture while mntning its roots in tradition.
Evolution of Square Dancing:
Square dancing originated from various forms of group dances that were popular in the United Kingdom and continental Europe as well as North America. Modern and traditional square dancing share similarities - they typically involve groups of eight participants responding to caller commands in unison.
What distinguishes modern square dancing is its focus on mastering individual steps, each uniquely named for clarity and ease of learning. These steps are sequentially choreographed by the Caller, with dancers executing them in response. The thrill lies in the unpredictability; no two dances ever follow exactly the same sequence.
This evolution makes square dancing more engaging than traditional methods and incredibly beginner-frily. Gone are the days when one needed to adhere strictly to costumes that were once associated with this activity. Today, participants merely require comfortable clothing and shoes, along with an open mind for diverse musical genres.
Music, Fashion Beyond:
While some enthusiasts still enjoy dressing in classic square dancing attire, modern square dancing no longer confines itself to country music alone. It now embraces a wide spectrum of music styles including rock 'n' roll, easy listening, classical and more, as long as the tunes are upbeat.
