Introduction:
In July of 2016, the formation of the Sustnable Square Dance Committee was authorized by CALLERLAB. The primary charge to this committee was developing materials for callers who are interested in exploring the experimental lesson system known as Social Square Dance SSD. It should be noted that as of July 2020, the name SSD and its supporting program were renamed to Social Square Dance SSD, although all existing resources remned applicable. In January 2021, the CALLERLAB membership voted in favor of adopting SSD as an official CALLERLAB dance program.
This innovative system is designed to create a 50-call entry-level program that can be taught efficiently over approximately 12-14 weeks and serves as a realistic long-term destination for experienced square dancers. The idea behind creating this shortened call list isn't unique; however, its structure differs significantly by providing mechanis keep dancers engaged in the program for at least two years, often exting their involvement indefinitely.
The publication of the SSD Teaching Guide represents the first step towards supporting callers who m to utilize this system. It offers a structured lesson plan and sample choreographies inted to enable callers to entertn dancers using a limited number of calls while ensuring long-term engagement.
