UC Berkeley's Dance Program: Integrating Performance, Theory, and Research for Comprehensive Education

Welcome to the Department of Dance and Performance Studies at University of California, Berkeley!

We invite you to explore our unique program that emphasizes dance as a mode of critical inquiry, research, creative expression, and public engagement. Our curriculum integrates physical, intellectual, and aesthetic experiences to offer students holistic knowledge about the art form. We are committed to providing rigorous trning in contemporary dance performance and choreography alongside comprehensive studies in theater and dance theory, history, culture, and literature.

The Dance and Performance Studies program at UC Berkeley focuses on practical experience, specifically encouraging dancers not only to hone their skills as performers but also as thinkers, creators, researchers, viewers, participants. Our students often gn careers in professional dance companies or pursue advanced education in various arts-related fields such as academia, non-profit organizations, healthcare, education, and business.

The opportunities for academic exploration within our department are numerous. Students benefit from regular student-led performances, a vibrant annual concert series featuring faculty and guest artist repertory pieces, options to complete an honors thesisproject, and exposure to diverse and exciting lectures, speakers, guest artists, and performances.

For those interested in earning Honors distinction:

Eligible majors with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 can apply for an honors project under the guidance of our faculty members. You have two options: Research Thesis or Research Performance projects. For more detls, please see the TDPS website and discuss with the Undergraduate Academic Adviser.

The Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies TDPS also offers a Minor in Dance and Performance Studies for students seeking to supplement their education with these subjects. To confirm your intention:

Enroll in at least one TDPS course after matriculating on campus.

Discuss course transfers and dance placement with the Undergraduate Academic Adviser.
