Read: 980

In the unprecedented times brought by COVID-19, Singapore Heart Foundation's annual National Heart WeekWorld Heart Day NHWWHD was reimagined for virtual participation. Instead of the traditional physical events held in heartland communities over decades, this year saw SHF innovate with an entirely digital event.

The launch of the interactive NHWWHD 2020 virtual event microsite took place on October 3 and 4th, 2020. It attracted more than 6,700 unique visitors who explored a heart-themed 'event floor' by clicking on ten engaging booths. These included health talks, cooking demonstrations, exercise sessions, interactive contests, and resources on heart health.

Notably, with cardiovascular disease CVD accounting for 29.3 of deaths in Singapore, the event focused on hypertension as a key concern due to its prevalence among adults aged between 30-60 years with nearly one-quarter affected, and further increasing risk to half of those aged 60-69.

In line with World Heart Federation's 'Use Heart' campgn theme for this year, SHF organized virtual health talks by cardiologists and nutritionists on topics like hypertension COVID-19, women’s heart health, sodium-blood pressure management. These were complemented by easy cooking demonstrations and age-appropriate workouts med at keeping blood pressure under control.

To rse awareness about the importance of hands-only CPR for saving lives during emergencies, SHF also hosted a panel discussion on this life-saving skill and addressed legal concerns around performing chest compressions on strangers.

During World Restart A Heart Day October 16, viewers took part in a live QA session with Cardiologist Dr. Mak Koon Hou, Senior Nutritionist Lim Kiat, and Senior Physiotherapist Feng Shumin via FacebookYouTube.

The #GoRedforWHD movement saw Singapore's cityscape transformed from September 29 to October 4, as iconic buildings like Gardens by the Bay, Ocean Financial Centre, Marina Square, and The Fullerton Hotel were illuminated in red, symbolizing health, life, vibrancy, and warning signs of CVD.

Thanks to generous support from sponsors and partners, SHF exts gratitude for participation in this year's NHWWHD virtual event. We look forward to continued support next year!
